The Indian government did not only institute a number of changes to its tourist visa systems but also to its employment and business visas. Why is that?

New Regulations for Business Visa India

Nationals of many countries, including Germany, Russia and UK, have been working on infrastructure projects in India, though the majority of workers came from China. The Indian authorities in China have issued more that 150,000 business visas in the last two years. It turned out that most of the visas were used by under- and semi-skilled Chinese workers to implement and execute a number of projects in India.

Indian authorities became aware of that matter when in May 2009 about 600 Chinese nationals had gotten into a fight with local villagers at a steel plant site in Jharkhand. Both involved parties filed complaints with the police. Read the rest of this entry →

In the last few months, people traveling to India were challenged by new visa regulations that have been put into force in November last year. Chennai Expats came across several people who were denied coming back to India because authorities at the airport or at the border to Nepal had put a stamp in their passport which said that they were not allowed to re-enter India for the next two months. In the following we provide some clarifications on the new visa regulations.

How to find a place to live?

Although Chennai constantly develops it is still said to be not as expat-friendly as other Metropolitan cities in India like Mumbai, Bangalore or Delhi. However, it is certainly picking up. Finding apartments and houses in the city itself might turn out little more difficult since the housing market there is slightly tighter than down South.  Along the ECR you might have more luck since house-owners are aware of the increasing number of foreigners coming to live in Chennai and build their houses accordingly to meet “expat standards.” Read the rest of this entry →
